SEWING GOES GREEN AT FIRST COLONY BRANCH LIBRARY
Fort Bend County Libraries’ First Colony Branch Library, 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land, will present a display of creative sewing projects made with recycled materials. The “Sewing Goes Green” exhibit will be on display throughout the month of May.
The items are from the collection of Sugar Land resident Mary Hyatt, who has worked as an instructor, lecturer, and designer of recycled and refurbished sewing projects, including clothing, belts, hats, drapes, pillows and furniture covers. Hyatt has even taken items from the trash, such as juice bags, and turned them into stylish purses.
Hyatt believes sewing can be much more than a craft—it can also be an art form. “Sewing can repair, alter the clothes we wear, and decorate a room,” says Hyatt. “It can also be used to design art objects such as wall quilts, which can become future heirloom treasures.”
Part of the display will feature items made by children and teens from 8 to 16 years old, using “found” supplies. “Since the program Project Runway began, a number of youth would like to go into careers as designers,” says Hyatt, who feels that encouraging this creativity increases children’s self-esteem and self-empowerment.
The exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours. For information, call 281-265-4444.
