Graphic-Novel 3-D Art At Albert George Branch Library
DURING FEBRUARY
An exhibit of handcrafted vinyl figures inspired by graphic novels will be on display throughout the month of February at Albert George Branch Library, 9230 Gene Street in Needville.
The figures are from the collection of Laz Ramirez of Missouri City. While some of the comic-book characters in the collection were purchased, many of the creations were sculpted and painted by Ramirez, who began his hobby in 2009. Characters in the exhibit include Batman, Spawn, Mario, X-Men, Transformers and Justice League.

STARS will host the 7th annual Girlfriends Giggle, benefiting the Fort Bend County Women’s Center, on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6:30-11 p.m. in the “Diva Den” at Fluor of Sugar Land.
Giggle is the ultimate “Girls’ Night Out” for hundreds of ladies each year, and is billed as a grown up pajama party celebrating female friendships. The evening includes a live DJ, dancing, top local restaurant fare, a martini bar, live and silent auctions, boutique shopping, dance lessons, and personal indulgences including manicures, massages and hairstyling.
STARS supports the Fort Bend County Women’s Center’s fundraising and direct service efforts through special events and by assisting with agency projects. Sweetwater OB/GYN Associates of Sugar Land is once again the top sponsor of the event.

Artreach Workshops At Mamie George Community Center
Catholic Charities is partnering with ARTreach to help bring the arts to seniors in Fort Bend County. The ARTreach Program at the Mamie George Community Center runs weekly and offers a variety of arts and crafts with music, painting and ceramics and invites an intergeneration mix of volunteers and friends. Classes are held on Thursdays from 10-11:30 a.m.
The program’s focus is on the senior’s health and wellbeing, providing enriching experiences, and social opportunities. Up to 30 seniors are joining the program weekly to participate in workshops to create cards, paint masterpieces, learn the art of watercolor, mosaics, ceramics, contour line drawing and more. Music Magic

The Fort Bend Boys Choir will offer Music Magic for 6- and 7-year-old boys. The class brings music alive through the use of movement, musical games, singing and other child-centered activities. Boys learn about pitch matching and rhythm awareness in addition to developing large muscle coordination, increased focus and better musicianship. No auditions are necessary — just a love of music and singing.
Since the Fort Bend Boys Choir organization is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, Music Magic will get to take part in the celebration. In addition to the eight-week program, Music Magic boys will sing with the three treble choirs and the alumni choir in the organization’s annual Spring Concert in May.
The class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:15 p.m. beginning Feb. 28 and end May 8 at First United Methodist Church Missouri City, 3900 Lexington Blvd. The cost is $80, and boys will receive a free Music Magic T-shirt. Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club Car Raffle

The Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club is selling raffle tickets for a 2012 Chevy Malibu LT furnished by Classic Chevrolet-Don Kerstetter. The tickets are $100, and only 500 (maximum) will be sold. The drawing will be held on March 31 during Parents Weekend at Texas A&M University (winner does not need to be present to win).
The second-place prize is a guided fishing trip for two in Rockport; and the third-place prize is Sugar Land Skeeters baseball tickets (11 games total), which includes the inaugural season opening day.

Alzheimer’s/Dementia Caregivers Support Group, Second

The Health & Wholeness Ministry at First United Methodist Church in Missouri City coordinates a support group for those caring for others affected by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. More than 70 percent of people with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, where 75 percent of their care is provided by family and friends. Caregiving can often cause stress, which can lead to health problems for the caregiver, disrupted social relationships, depression and decreased quality of care provided to the loved one.
If you are a caregiver or friend or relative of a caregiver, join this twice-monthly meeting that provides a forum for learning, socializing, discussing and supporting one another. The support group is facilitated by trained volunteers and meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. in the church parlor. Help Restock Food Pantry Shelves At East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry
For more than 20 years, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry has been making sure that neighbors in the community have enough food to feed their families. Located in Stafford, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry operates the largest Food Pantry in Fort Bend, helping more than 3,000 individuals every month.
East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry is a place where residents in the community can go for food and emergency assistance when they have nowhere else to turn. As the Ministry strives to provide food to its neighbors in need, donations are down by 10 percent and the Food Pantry shelves are bare.

16th Annual Dad And Daughter Dance In Missouri City

The 16th annual Dad and Daughter Dance with the theme “Princess Ball” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Community Center, 1522 Texas Parkway, in the City Hall complex.
“The dance is a special time for Dads and Daughters to share precious memories and time together,” said Parks and Recreation Specialist Lauren Carrier. Dads and Daughters will receive a photo and food, with corsages available for purchase at the dance. The young ladies will also enjoy a confetti explosion at the conclusion of the exciting evening.

Loving Friends is a social group that meets once a month for dinner, entertainment and fellowship as they move on with their lives after the death of a spouse. Pregnancy Resource Center’s Peer Counselor Training
The Pregnancy Resource Center of Fort Bend County will hold Peer Counselor training classes beginning on Thursday, Feb. 2. The six classes run all month, every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6-9 p.m. (excluding Valentine’s Day). Third Annual Helen Cordes Award Luncheon

The Fluor Corporation, Roberta K. Randall Charitable Foundation and Marion and David Young present the Third Annual Helen Cordes Award Luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Safari Ranch.
The award luncheon is open to the community and held in honor of an individual who has given their time, experience and expertise to Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse Inc.
The 2012 Honoree is Linda Schoonmaker, a partner in the labor and employment department of Seyfarth Shaw LLP. She served on FBRC’s Board of Directors from 2004 to 2010 and as the Board President from 2006 to 2008. She is steadfast in her devotion to FBRC’s mission, programs and projects and is a trusted partner in substance abuse prevention in the community.

The Helen Cordes Award Luncheon was founded on the community achievements of Helen Cordes, who served on the Board of Directors of Fort Bend Regional Council from 1991-1997 and was the President of the Board from 1992-1995. Helen served FBRC with a passion for its mission and inspired that same passion in so many who were privileged to work with her. In recognition of Helen’s leadership and long years of dedicated service, the Helen Cordes Award was established.

Clements Hs Pro Grad Style Show

Clements High School Pro Grad is hosting its 2012 Talent and Style Show on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Clements Commons. The senior class will be showing off their talents, and then stepping out in fashions ranging from a casual evening out, to the formal prom night. Local shops will be helping the students dress in style for the event.

The Fort Bend Junior Service League, along with Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, will present the 2012 FBJSL Charity Ball and Casino “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” on Saturday, March 3, at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. Proceeds from the event will benefit Lunches of Love and the FBJSL Community Assistance Fund.
The musical group Password will be performing at this year’s ball. Password is a local group who adapt and play in almost every style of music from smooth jazz, soft favorites, disco, R&B, top 40, Latin and country. Be prepared to dance the night away as they belt out hits from the nostalgic ’70s to the latest chart toppers. The 2012 Hearts and Hand Gala begins 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at SafarI Texas in Richmond. The Gala features a sitdown dinner and dance, silent and live auctions and raffle. The Fort Bend Boys Choir’s annual Gala Dinner and Auction will be held on Saturday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Palm Pavilion at Safari Texas Ranch. The world renowned Tour Choir will perform a medley of songs of a decidedly French theme in honor of their 30th anniversary summer tour to France.
