The “inmates” served time for a great cause

Michael Garfield, The High-Tech Texan, emceed the Literacy Council of Fort Bend’s (LCFBC) Jail & Bail event on Nov. 1 at The Rouxpour  in Sugar Land Town Square. The event kicked off the 2018 Reading between the Wines event to be held on March 23, where the keynote speaker will be Piper Kerman, best-selling author of Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.

Garfield announced the progress of the “inmates” as they each attempted to
accumulate $500 “bail money.” Inmates included Helen Bow, LCFBC board
member; Kyle Dawson, assistant GM, Sugar Land Skeeters; Rebecca Deurlein, Ph.D., LCFBC board member; Mary Favre, community supporter, C&M Favre Foundation; John Healey, Fort Bend County district attorney; Bill Hickl, LCFBC board member; Gena Horak, LCFBC board member; Don Kerstetter, LCFBC advisory council; Cari Middaugh, Fort Bend Lifestyles & Homes magazine; Swatson, Sugar Land Skeeters mascot; and Jeff Tallas, LCFBC board member.

The fun event included a buffet meal from The Rouxpour, viewing of the World Series game, and a surprise donation from Favre to four unsuspecting inmates on behalf of the C&M Favre Foundation. All proceeds support the Literacy Council, whose mission is to improve family, community, and professional lives through adult literacy education.

The Literacy Council provides several programs for its students: Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language, GED Preparation, U.S. Citizenship Preparation, Computer Skills and Job Readiness Skills.
