Literacy Council’s of Fort Bend’s
7th Annual Spelling Bee

Thursday, September 8 was a stellar evening for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County’s 7th annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, presented by CenterPoint Energy and co-chaired by Holly Kaminga and Lawren Eckhardt. This year’s event raised more than $40,000 to support the Council’s six programs: basic literacy tutoring; GED preparation; English as a Second Language (ESL); basic computer skills classes; citizenship preparation; and transitions to post-secondary education.

The event was held at the Insperity Club at Constellation Field. This year’s Emcee, City of Sugar Land Mayor Joe R. Zimmerman, welcomed the audience of over 250.  Four Judges presided over the Bee: City of Richmond Mayor Evalyn Moore; City of Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen; Former City of Rosenberg Mayor Vincent Morales, Jr.; and Trey Reichert of Johnson Development Corporation. Ruth Ann Johnston, a volunteer tutor with the Literacy Council, served as the Bee Pronouncer.

Cowboy Up
Sponsor Party

Supporters of Parks Youth Ranch’s charity event, Cowboy Up, grabbed their boots and bling and partied for a purpose at the Cowboy Couture VIP Sponsor Party on September 14! The event celebrated Cowboy Up sponsors, who have raised over $120,000 for the abused, at-risk and homeless children at Parks Youth Ranch (PYR) this year.

Executive Director Shannon Bloesch read the handwritten stories of the child residents who have been significantly impacted by the mission of PYR. Glasses were raised in support of a brighter future for these children! The event featured light bites and drinks from Mosset New American Grill. The mission of Parks Youth Ranch is to provide emergency shelter, counseling, and life-changing services to abused, at-risk and homeless children ages 7-17 in our community.
