Five First-Time Recipients Were Given This Honor For The Upcoming College Year

Suburban Sugar Land Women (SSLW) and its partners held the 28th annual Service and Academic Excellence Luncheon on April 22. Five first-time, annual and competitive scholarships are awarded based on community service, academic excellence and leadership. Because of the generosity of Dr. Moses and Susan Wilcox, members and Diamond Partners and 2017 scholarships’ partners, each first-time recipient will be awarded $1,500 and each continuing scholarship recipient will be awarded $1,000.

The 2017 scholarship recipients chosen from applicants from Fort Bend, Katy, Lamar Consolidated, and Stafford School Districts are:

  • Trinity Hawkins, Stafford MSD-Stafford High School, plans to attend Texas Southern University and major in business administration.
  • Taylor Howard, Fort Bend ISD-Hightower High School, college undecided but plans to major in chemical engineering.
  • Mia Johnson, Fort Bend ISD-Ridge Point High School, plans to attend Texas Southern University and major in pre-pharmacy.
  • Soromtochi Onyeahialam, Fort Bend ISD-Ridge Point High School, plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in biology.
  • Madison Owens, Lamar CISD-George Ranch High School, plans to attend University of North Texas in Dallas and major in biology.

The luncheon was held at Veritas Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Sugar Land, which was the generous partial underwriter. John Taylor was the event coordinator, and Mose Austin was master of ceremonies. Marvelyn Harris, Scholarships’ Chair, welcomed and introduced recipients, their families and SSLW partners. Addie L. Johnson, Esq., who received an SSLW scholarship in 1996, was the guest speaker and shared practical and sometimes funny strategies on succeeding in college and life.

Elise Leaks Harmon reviewed the scholarship’s process and updates and distributed hard copies of the required bursar”s form. SSLW Founder and President Mable Scott Austin shared specific partnership opportunities and information about SSLW. An informative and empowering three-minute video created and updated annually by Joel C. Harmon, member and Diamond partner, was shown.

Mose Austin and Marvelyn Harris presented each recipient a scholarship certificate, beautifully framed by June Peggs, and tote bag with useful items. Tote bag contents were generously donated by Dr. Margaret J. Allen and Belinda Allen-Clark of Amazing Smiles, Joel and Elise Harmon, Larry and Monica Riley, Katina Scott, and Mose and Mable Austin.

Dr. Charles Dupre, superintendent, Fort Bend Independent School District, closed the event with a prayer as scholarship recipients, their families, partners, and committee members held hands.

SSLW’s Phenomenal Partners in attendance were Margaret J. Allen, D.D.S. and Belinda Allen-Clark, office manager, Amazing Smiles; Dr. Charles and Seeju Dupre; Evelyn Dean, president, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Suburban Houston-Fort Bend Alumna Chapter; and new partner Towana Bryant of Trinity Freight Service, LLC.
