HOUSTON METHODIST SUGAR LAND HOSPITAL CELEBRATES NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY, JUNE 1
Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is joining nearly 15.5 million American cancer survivors celebrating the 31st Annual National Cancer Survivors Day® this year.
Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land welcomes all local cancer survivors and a guest of their choice or one caregiver each to the celebration and resource fair from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. News anchor, Shern-Min Chow from KHOU 11 will emcee the event. This year’s keynote speaker is Sally Baskey and her popular character Ida Mae FudpuckerGuests can have a photo taken at the photo booth and will be invited to participate in a fun activity prior to enjoying a globally-inspired lunch. Registration is required at events.houstonmethodist.org/survivorluncheon-sl or call 281-274-7500.
“A diagnosis of cancer can generate many emotions but survival is about embracing life and living each day to the fullest,” said Amy Sebastian-Deutsch, director of oncology services. “You will find our Cancer Survivor’s Day celebration and resource fair filled with laughter, camaraderie, hope, compassion, faith, love and music as we honor cancer survivors for their strength and courage.”
Anyone living with a personal history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – is a cancer survivor, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. “National Cancer Survivors Day is a great opportunity for cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and family to come together and affirm there can be quality of life after a diagnosis of cancer,” said Clive Shkedy, M.D., medical director of radiation oncology.
Additionally, the foundation says that more people are surviving cancer than ever before, thanks to advances in prevention, early detection, treatment and follow-up care. Cancer, however, does come with many challenges. “Despite these difficulties, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives with the support of other survivors,” said Shkedy.

ANNUAL HIBISCUS SOCIETY SHOW AND SALE, JUNE 3
Replenish your garden with hibiscus at the Lone Star Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society’s annual show and sale event on Sunday, June 3, at Condit Elementary, 7000 S. 3rd Street in Bellaire. Judging will take place in the morning, and the flower show and sale will be open to the public from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free.
Exhibitors, both experienced and novice, will enter their hibiscus blooms the morning of the show to compete to win awards in four major categories – Amateur, Collector, Open Collector and Commercial. Growers wishing to enter their plants in the competitions generally arrive between 7:30 and 9 a.m., and entries must be complete by 11:30 a.m. Once the plants are entered, the judges inspect the blooms and evaluate them based on their form, size, color, substance and condition. Blooms can be single, double or miniature, and there will also be a competition for seedlings.
Hibiscus growers are encouraged to join in the festivities by simply bringing their blooms that are opening on the morning of the show to enter in the competition.
Once the judging is complete, the facilities are open free to the public from 1-4 p.m. to view the competition blooms and purchase plants. At the plant sale, you will find eye-catching hibiscus in a wide variety of colors, including whites, yellows, oranges, peaches, pinks, reds, purples, lavenders, blues, and browns, as well as various combinations of these colors. New varieties of hibiscus and special plant selections from Florida and California will be available for purchase. Many varieties of this stunning perennial will be available that cannot be found at your local nursery.
Even if you have shopped the show in the past, you may want to come again this spring because the assortment of hibiscus plants expands each year as many growers experiment with hybridizing the flower. Hybridization is the process of cross-breeding flowers to create new types of seedlings that blossom into blooms with unique color combinations and patterns.

A CONCERT FOR RECOVERY: AN EVENING WITH TRAVIS MEADOWS, JUNE 9
The Council on Recovery and Sober Recreation Committee present a Concert for Recovery: An Evening with Travis Meadows, featuring Max Flinn on Saturday, June 9, 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. at Hamill Auditorium, 303 Jackson Hill, Houston.
Travis Meadows spent years trying to escape himself. He’s anything but selfish, so he’d find a way to get away – a bottle, a bag, a sermon – and he’d share it with everyone. That was then. Now, Meadows isn’t trying to get anybody lost or high. Instead, he’s trying to get every single one of us to settle in deeply to ourselves – and love what’s there. Sober nearly eight years, Meadows’ blues-hewn voice, acoustic guitar, and storytelling are a relatable meditation on love, acceptance, and redemption.
Max Flinn began teaching himself to play the guitar at the age of 10. His love for Texas country music was heavily influenced by Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, Cory Morrow, Roger Creager, and other local greats. Nonetheless, from his late teens to early 20s, music took a backseat to drugs and alcohol. He finally threw in the towel in December 2012 and turned his life around. Sober over 5 years, Max is enjoying life in ways he could have never imagined.
This is a smoke-free, vape-free, alcohol-free event. Go to councilonrecovery.org/concert_series for tickets and more information.
